Co-chair's report on November 2016 HL7 Australia WGM/clinFHIR session
The November HL7 Australia WGM was held in Melbourne on 7-8 November on the University of Melbourne Grattan Street campus. The meeting was attended by around 20+ delegates, most are FHIR Connectathon participants. It was acknowledged that better organisation and publicity/promotion would be required to improve participation.
Medication WG did not hold a face-to-face meeting due to (1) not sufficient WG members attending the meeting, and (2) most delegates were engaged in FHIR connectathon event.
A clinFHIR session was held on 7 November from 9:30 to 12:30. Four members participated at the workshop. There were extensive and productive exchanges on the value proposition of clinical engagement and engagement strategies. Leaders from IHE Australia (Bernie Crowe) and HISA (Phil Robinson) agreed that it would be highly strategic and productive for the professional organisations (i.e. IHE Australia, HISA and HL7 Australia) and the Australian Digital Health Agency to collaborate in facilitating clinical engagement and contributions to advance clinical informatics and FHIR standards. It was proposed that these organisation should work towards hosting a clinician FHIR workshop/event at the 2017 HIC conference in Brisbane. Bernie and Phil will take the recommendation to their respective professional organisations.
The demonstration of clinFHIR went smoothly and discussions on optimising the use of clinFHIR were very well received.
Current Australian FHIR installations:
- 1.4.0 implemented in NCTS (ontoserver - NEHTA terminology server)
- 1.4.0 implemented in MyHealthRecord
- Majority of vendor implementations using DSTU2

FHIR Resources
FHIR STU3 status report
FHIR STU ballot was completed in September 2016. It generated large amount of ballot comments which are being processed by respective HL7 International WGs.
Patient Care WG holds weekly conference calls (main call on Thursday 5:00pm US Eastern) and other calls by different PCWG project teams, e.g. Care Plan, Allergy/Intolerance - to process and dispose ballot comments
HL7 International is considering deferring the publication of STU3 from end of this year to end of February due to the volume of content coming in the ballot.
Medication resources ballot comments are processed by HL7 International Pharmacy WG.
HL7 Australia Work Plan on Medication Resources
Discussions on the Medication WG forward planning of work. Two resources were identified at previous conference calls as priority items for review and creation of Australian extension or profile to support Australian requirements:
- Medication
- Medication Request
It was submitted that another resource should be included - Medication Dispense.
Danielle Bancroft from FredIT indicated that herself and colleagues from FredIT would be willing to support the review and other work required for creating Australian extensions on Medication Request and Medication Dispense
Actions Arising
- All participants at the November 2016 conference call will document high level Australian requirements to support the creation of Australian extensions and profiles on the three FHIR medication resources, i.e. Medication, Medication Request and Medication Response. These requirements will be reviewed at the next conference call
- Work plan for Australian extensions and profiles on the three medication resources to be discussed and drafted at the December conference call
- Stephen to include FHIR gForge and Zulip URLs in the HL7 Australian Medication WG confluence page as informative resources for members
